Digital Library: Evolution, Architecture, and Future Directions

Author(s):  Dr. Paresh Ilasariya & Manjula Ilasaria

Abstract: This paper examines the evolution, architecture, and future directions of digital libraries. We review historical developments, core components (content acquisition, metadata, storage, retrieval, user interfaces), and key challenges such as long-term preservation, copyright, and accessibility. We present a reference architecture for a modular digital library, propose a methodology for migration of legacy collections, and evaluate the role of artificial intelligence in enhancing discovery and user personalization. Finally, we discuss policy and ethical considerations and offer recommendations for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.

Keywords - digital library, information retrieval, metadata, digitization, open access, preservation.
